With that in mind, I thought it right to do just that and make one of Gloria’s patterns presented in her class. Additionally, she does a magnificent job covering the topics of lighting, perspective, color theory, harmony, balance, and movement, each one important to every artist no matter their medium.Īrtists, it is said, learn best when first copying the work of the masters. One can never have too many “tools” in your toolbox! I jumped when offered the chance to take a zoom quilting class with Australian quilter, Gloria Loughman, in which she taught her unique “tile” technique for lighting up landscapes. In addition to being a teacher, I’m also a dedicated life long learner. Raw edge applique and quilted by Sue Hickman Berryville, VA 9/2021 Simply put, this quit makes me smile and brings joy to my heart. I placed a floral medallion in the off white centers and intricately quilted the brown, peach, and green areas to give them equal prominence. I let the design of the focal fabric dictate my free-motion quilting in those blocks and in the border. However, when it came to quilting this top, “simple” wouldn’t cut it. I found the coordinating peach, green, brown, and off white tone-on-tone fabrics easily enough and the piecing was also simple. The designer in me generally prefers to pull together fabrics from different fabric lines, and that’s what I did with this quilt. While the pattern calls for 1 yard cuts of five coordinating fabrics, I bought enough to make 18 of the ‘framed’ focal blocks and incorporated the ‘left over’ into the borders. The layout is a simple (and free) Five Yard Quilt pattern distributed by Mill End Textiles years ago. From the moment I first saw it, I loved this focal fabric (Tangier Ikat Vine Orange #PWDF166) by Dena (Fishbein) Designs for Free Spirit and Westminster Fibers. Their Great-Aunt Sue loved them very much! The Tiles of Tangierįussy-cut, pieced, and free-motion longarm quilted by Sue Hickman Berryville, VA 12/2021Īs is often the case with my quilts, this one was inspired by the fabric.
